The
first step in the security of a property is to assess the
neighbourhood before you purchase the property. Certain areas are
burglar-prone, whilst other places might be relatively free of
thieves. As far as possible, choose the latter neighbourhoods for
buying your property. Crime risks are classified as low, medium or
high by the police, the insurers and other authorities. Check with
them about the area.
The
security of the external area outside the building premises can be
done by the following actions. Prune and cut all shrubs and bushes
to avoid hiding by intruders. Install floodlights in such a way that
there are no dark areas around the building. Keep the important
outdoor lights on during the night, whether you are at home or not.
Gates, garages and sheds situated outside the building but inside
the compound should be securely locked after use. The house number
should be clearly displayed so that the police patrol can easily
check the house or find it in emergency.
The
doors should be of strong construction with quality dead bolt locks
that fit into the doorframe.
Windows
should be fitted with grills or bars that cannot be easily removed.
An
inventory of the items in the property should be kept at hand so
that anything missing can be easily identified.
Televisions,
computers and other high value items should be marked with security
identity numbers in the way the police approve.
A
trusted relative or neighbour should be asked to check the property
periodically when we go out of town on work or on vacation.
Light
timers can be programmed to turn the lights on and off in cycles, if
your vacation will be a longer one. This will give the impression
that the house is occupied.
The
burglar alarm systems should be activated whenever you leave the
property.
The
local police authorities and your security service provider should
be informed of your absence from the property, if you are leaving
town.
Proper
insurance of the property and the articles in it should be done. The
insurance programme should have burglary and theft risks covered.
